What is Merlin?
Merlin is an indispensable tool for all structural steel designers.

Merlin speeds the repetitive calculations required for design to BS5950.  The Blue Book goes some way, Merlin goes further providing simplicity, precision and versatility.

Merlin delivers a common format for a greater variety of steel sections.

Merlin facilitates the creation of new tables and properties for rolled and fabricated sections.

Merlin is part of the Quiksoft library of Programs

Merlin is available in both 16 and 32 bit versions for Windows 3.1, Windows '95 and Windows NT.

Calculation Methods
Calculations

In the calculations for capacity, lateral torsional buckling, strut action, combined axial and bending, and appendix G type buckling, the program uses the formulae and methods of BS5950:Part 1:1990.

Section properties

When calculating section properties, Merlin fully accounts for all flange tapers and fillet radii.

In the calculations for Area, Inertia, Elastic, and Plastic Modus the program uses a specialist method of numeric integration.

Values for u and x are calculated from the formulae in : Appendix B of BS5950:Part 1:1990.

Warping constant H is taken from the Steel Construction Institutes guide: Design of Members Subject to Combined Bending and Torsion.

The Torsion Constant J is taken from: JOHNSTON, B.G. and EL DARWISH, I.A., Torsion of structural shapes. Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Journal of the Structural Division, Vol. 91, No. ST1, pp 203-228, February 1965.
